No final de 1985 Wayne Hussey e Craig Adams deixam The Sisters of Mercy. The Mission é formado nesse mesmo ano.
No início de 1986 tenhem a sua primeira turnê européia, acompanhando The Cult. Eles lançaram 2 singles independentes, chegando a N 1 nos tops alternativos do Reino Unido, antes de assinar um contrato mundial com a Phonogram (hoje Universal).
O primeiro single do novo selo, "Stay With Me", foi direto para o gráfico do Reino Unido em 30 º seguido do álbum de estréia "God''s Own Medicine" no No. 14. Durante os próximos oito anos a banda lançou mais seis álbuns e teve mais 12 singles anthemic incluindo clássicos como "Wasteland", "Tower Of Strength", "Beyond The Pale", "Deliverance" e "Butterfly on a Wheel". Total de vendas de álbuns em todo o mundo até à data já ultrapassou os3 milhões de copias.
The Mission tenhem uma serie de seguidores fanaticos que os segue constantemente incluindo destaques como sete concertos esgotados consecutivos no Astoria Theatre, em Londres, a principal atração do famoso Reading Festival, duas vezes, e também tocando com o U2, The Cure e Robert Plant.
Em 1994, a banda separou-se de Phonogram após uma série de disputas contratuais e assinou o seu rótulo de "Neverland" para a Sony Dragnet na Europa. Dois anos depois saiem mais dois álbuns.
Depois disso decidiram fazer uma pausa.
Em 1999, totalmente revigorados, The Mission reuniram-se, e entraram numa longa turnê e visitar lugares tão distantes como Brasil, Argentina, Chile, México, E.U.A., África do Sul, Grécia (Recon 2000 Tour), incluindo aparições memoráveis no Eurorock e Festivais M''era Luna e que culminou numa bem sucedida turnê Europeia em Novembro/Dezembro de 2000.
No final de 2001 The Mission lançou o que muitos consideram ser o seu melhor álbum até à data "aura". Ele marcou o início de uma era contemporânea e excitante para a banda.
O álbum chegou ao número 1 no gráfico alternativo alemão e lá permaneceu por oito semanas. A banda também entrou em numa turnê alemã como convidados especiais de''HIM'', para coincidir com o lançamento do álbum.
Em 2003, a banda tem mais uma tour uma vez mais em toda a Europa. A nova formação da banda (Wayne sendo acompanhado por Rob Holliday na guitarra, Ritchie Vernon no baixo e Steve Spring na bateria) trouxe uma energia nova e dinâmica para a banda.
A banda continuou em turnê durante 2003, 2004 (breathen e Absolution) e 2005 (Lighting the Candles) com os períodos intercalares vendo Wayne trabalhando em vários projetos paralelos, incluindo aqueles com músicos italianos, Volita Lux e o filme mercenario, resultando na edição limitada do Single "Breath Me In", que alcançou o número um nos alemaes DAC.
Durante a 2005 "Lighting the Candles"tour, um DVD duplo com o mesmo nome foi lançado para coincidir com a excursão.
No início de 2006 "Anthology - The Phonogram Years" - uma compilação de alguns dos melhores trabalhos da banda, além de "Waves Upon the Sand / Crusade" DVD - um re-lançamento de dois vídeos.
2007 vê o 21 º aniversário dos Mission,e novo album ´God Is A Bullet´.
