The Cult - Biografia - Discografia

Originalmente conhecido primeiro como Southern Death Cult, depois Death Cult, a banda foi formada pelo vocalista Ian Astbury (nascido em 14 de maio de 1962, Heswell, Merseyside, Inglaterra) em 1981. Depois de uma juventude passada na Escócia e no Canadá (onde ganhou a exposição precoce à cultura dos índios nativos,juntando aos estágios iniciais da carreira da banda), Astbury mudou-se para uma casa em Bradford, Yorkshire, e descobriu um grupo ensaiando no porão. O pessoal do Grupo incluindo Haq Quereshi (bateria), Buzz 'David' Burrows (guitarra) e Barry Jepson (baixo)
Como seu vocalista, Astbury supervisionou uma rápida ascensão na sorte, e o seu concerto de estreia foi em Londres no clube Heaven atraindo uma audiência de quase 2.000 pessoas.
Southern Death Cult fez a sua estréia em disco em Dezembro de 1982 com a dupla release 'Moya' / 'Fatman', e lançou um álbum auto-intitulado em Beggars Banquet Records. Eles apoiaram Bauhaus na turnê no início de 1983. Astbury e a sua imagem de 'punk positivo "porta-voz, e o fato de que o seu conceito indígena estava sendo diluído pelo formato do grupo. A sua nova banda,agora com novo nome Death Cult.
A combinação do demo single, e faixas ao vivo foram emitidos como o álbum unico "Southern Death Cult", a saber, "The Reverend"Ray Mondo (bateria) e Jamie Stewart (baixo), mais o guitarrista Billy Duffy (nascida em 12 de maio de 1959, Manchester, Inglaterra; ex-Ed Banger e The Nosebleeds e Theatre of Hate).
Eles fizeram a sua estréia em julho de 1983, com uma pista de quatro homônimos de 12 polegadas, altura em que Astbury também mudou o seu próprio nome (ele já tinha usado Ian Lindsay).
Entretanto,em 1984 mudam novamente de nome -Death Cult tornaram-se simplesmente The Cult. Eles gravaram o seu primeiro álbum em conjunto, Dreamtime, para lançamento em setembro de 1984,as suas vendas impulsionadas com o número 1 nos tops independentes normalmente com o hino 'Spiritwalker'. no início do ano seguinte, "She Sells Sanctuary '. Mark Brzezicki de Big Country ajudam nas sessões para o próximo álbum até a chegada definitiva de Les Warner (nascido em 13 de fevereiro de 1961), que já tinha trabalhado com Johnny Thunders, Julian Lennon e Califórnia Randy.

Electric viram a transição da banda de rock pesado concluída.Com influencias de "Led Zeppelin" Co-produzido por Rick Rubin, Electric foi uma declaração corajosa e ousada de intenções, se não completamente o item acabado. Tornou-se um sucesso em ambos os lados do Atlântico, atingindo o número 4 e 38 no Reino Unido e E.U.A, respectivamente.
Reduzidos a um trio de Astbury, Stewart e Duffy, nas sessões de Sonic Temple, contrataram temporariamente os serviços do baterista Mickey Curry. Foi um álbum que combinou a paixão do amor atmosférico com a energia desenfreada de Electric. A turnê mundial de 1989 fez a aumentar a banda com Matt Sorum (nascido em 19 de novembro de 1960, Mission Viejo, Califórnia, E.U.A.; bateria) e Mark Taylor (teclados, ex-Alarm and Armoury Show). Stewart sai em 1990, enquanto Sorum iria para Guns N'Roses. Ceremony foi lançado em 1991, com a ajuda de Charley Drayton (baixo) e o retorno do Mickey Curry. Esta foi uma coleção retrocesso das músicas, que tinham mais em comum com o Love" que os seus dois álbuns anteriores.
No entanto, tendo já estabelecido uma base de fãs enorme, o sucesso foi praticamente garantido. Por esta altura, no entanto, Astbury tinha partido e mais tarde ressurgiu com uma nova banda,The Holy Barbarians.
