New Model Army - Biografia - Discografia

New Model Army é uma banda de pós-punk de Bradford,inglaterra formada em 1980 . Combinando a força do punk rock com letras politizadas, a exemplo do que os U2 e os The Alarm faziam, e o folk rock de protesto de Billy Bragg, New Model Army soava como poucas bandas surgidas na mesma época e no mesmo estilo. O som era aguerrido e preciso, mas aos poucos foi esmorecendo, sem perder a qualidade, dando lugar para guitarras, violinos e harmônicas, deixando um pouco o punk de lado e caminhando mais a fundo na seara folk, misturando letras políticas, muitas vezes vistas como esquerdistas e anti-Thatcher (Margareth Thatcher, primeira-ministra britânica na década de oitenta), com momentos de introspecção. Mesmo sendo aclamados pelo público e crítica, a banda nunca conseguiu chegar aos postos mais altos dos tops inglesas, e, infelizmente, sempre foi ignorada nos Estados Unidos.
O nome da banda foi tirado de Oliver Cromwell, cidadão que lutou contra a monarquia no meio do século 17. A banda foi criada pelo guitarrista e vocalista Justin Sullivan, que era chamado de Slade the Leveller, uma referência aos Levellers, uma facção democrática radical, associada à Cromwell. O conceito do trabalho do grupo foi criado por Sullivan e Jolls Denby, uma conhecida e respeitada poetiza e novelista, que manteve uma longa vida amorosa com Sullivan.
O primeiro a entrar na banda, depois de Sullivan, foi o baixista Stuart Morrow, sendo seguido por diversos bateristas, até que Rob Heaton apareceu e se tornou um membro fixo, além de se tornar um dos letristas principais, junto com o vocalista Sullivan. Denby, por seu lado, tornou-se manager do grupo, além de produzir as capas dos discos e fazer os backing vocal em algumas faixas.
Com a banda formada, os New Model Army passaram algum tempo tocando nas cidades próximas a Yorkshire, e criaram um certo burburinho na imprensa musical britânica. Em 1983 lançam o seu primeiro single, Bittersweet, que rendeu um acordo com o selo Abstract no final do mesmo ano. O primeiro trabalho lançado pelo selo, foi o single Great Expectations, que entrou nos tops independentes abrindo espaço para o primeiro álbum da banda, Vengeance, lançado em 1984. Recheado de canções políticas como Spirit of the Falklands, contra a guerra das Malvinas, e Small Town England, teve como destaque a faixa The Price, responsável pelo contrato com a EMI inglesa.
Pela EMI o primeiro single foi No Rest, entrando no Top 30 da tabela britânica em 1985. Neste mesmo ano sai o segundo disco do grupo, No Rest For the Wicked. Um pouco antes do lançamento, o baixista Stuart Morrow deixa a banda. Ainda em 1985 lançam o EP Better Than Them, que conta com a entrada de um jovem de 17 anos, Jason `Moose` Harris, no lugar de Morrow. Com a nova formação lançam, no ano seguinte, The Ghost of Caim, disco de maior sucesso deles no Brasil, graças ao hit 51st State, uma crítica as relações entre Inglaterra e Estados Unidos. Este disco marca, também, a entrada do NMA no folk rock inglês, com a participação de Mark Feltham na harmônica. Outras músicas de The Ghost of Caim que chamaram a atenção foram Poison Street, sucesso na Inglaterra e The Hunt, canção que abre o trabalho, e se tornou presente em diversos concertos dos Sepultura.
Mas foi com White Coats, que saiu no EP New Model Army, de 1987, que a banda conseguiu o seu maior hit. Também foi a primeira vez que usaram teclados no trabalho do grupo. Ainda em 1987, o guitarrista Ricky Warwick é chamado para a segunda guitarra durante a turnê que o NMA faria. Passam-se dois anos e, agora com a produção de Tom Dowd, os New Model Army lançam o quarto álbum, Thunder and Consolation, considerado o melhor trabalho do grupo, que é aclamado pela crítica. Este disco continua com forte influência da música folk, graças a presença do violinista Ed Alleyne-Johnson. O primeiro single, Green and Grey é um dos destaques, junto com Stupid Questions e Vagabonds.
Com a saída de Ricky Warwick, Chris McLaughlin assume a segunda guitarra em mais uma turnê. Mas uma nova baixa acontece, o baixista Harris deixa o grupo e para o seu lugar entra Peter Nelson, membro do Brotherhood of Lizards. A estréia em disco de Nelson se dá em 1990, no álbum Impurity, que também contou com um novo segundo guitarrista, Adrian Portas. Em 1991 lançam o álbum duplo ao vivo, Raw Melody Men, último trabalho pela EMI e assinam com a EPIC.
Pela nova gravadora lançam apenas um disco, The Love of Hopeless Causes, contando com o hit Here Comes the War, em 1993. Durante os anos 90 várias compilações foram lançadas, singles, lados b, sessões de rádio e outras raridades da banda, mantendo a chama do grupo acesa, já que um novo lançamento com músicas inéditas, só viria em 1998. Mas, enquanto os New Model Army estavam hibernando, Sullivan e Joolz montaram o Red Sky Coven, onde ofereciam uma mistura de música, poesia e comédia.
Em 1998, Sullivan reativa os New Model Army contando com o apoio de Peter Nelson, no baixo, e Rob Heaton, na bateria, juntaram-se a eles os guitarristas/tecladistas Dave Blomberg e Dean White. Com esta formação gravam o disco Strange Brotherhood, pelo selo inglês Eagle, depois lançado pela EMI no resto da Europa. No mesmo ano, saem numa nova turnê pela Europa, onde gravam outro disco duplo ao vivo, … & Nobody Else, lançado pelo selo Attack Attack/Zomba. Também por este selo, a banda lança seu último trabalho, Eight, em 2000. Eight é o primeiro disco sem o baterista Rob Heaton, que foi substituido por Michael Dean
No ano seguinte lançam Lost Songs, coletânea com músicas que saíram como bônus em outros discos, destas, nove faixas nunca tinham sido lançadas anteriormente. Em 2003 sai o primeiro trabalho solo do guitarrista e vocalista, Justin Sullivan, Navigating By The Stars e em 2004 eles entram no estúdio para a gravação de um novo álbum dos New Model Army.
Em novembro de 2004, Robert Heaton, baterista do grupo, morre graças a complicações com um cancro no pancrêas.
